On the evening of December 11th, a 58-year-old Asian man and retired doctor, Deepak Bhasin, made a frantic call to 911, reporting that he was under attack inside his home on San Nicholas Drive. When police officers arrived at the residence around 7:30 p.m., they discovered a gruesome scene. Bhasin was found deceased, having sustained multiple stab wounds.
The trauma to his body was immediately recognized by authorities as being consistent with a homicide.
The investigation into the violent death of the former physician soon uncovered a complicated personal history. Bhasin had previous encounters with law enforcement, which had led him to create a website where he detailed his negative experiences and alleged police brutality. This public-facing crusade against law enforcement added a layer of complexity to the investigation, though it was ultimately a different path that led to a breakthrough in the case. Detectives delved into the doctor's recent communications, which proved to be the key to unlocking the mystery of his death. Cell phone records revealed a series of messages exchanged between Bhasin and a 19-year-old woman named Jamie Lea Walker. These communications indicated that Walker had arranged to meet with Bhasin at his home shortly before he was killed. Based on this digital trail and other gathered evidence, authorities were able to place Walker at or near the scene of the crime at the time of the murder. In 2013, Jamie Lea Walker was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Deepak Bhasin.
