In the early evening of September 20, 2015, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a burst of violence shattered the quiet intersection of Hartford Avenue and Mohawk Boulevard. Damon Dyer, a 29-year-old African-American man, was behind the wheel of his car when another vehicle, described by witnesses as a large, white car, possibly a Crown Victoria, pulled up alongside.
Shots rang out, and Dyer was struck multiple times.
After the shooting, Dyer's vehicle, now without a driver in control, careened into a parked car. Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported him to St. John Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, his injuries were too severe. Three days later, on September 23, 2015, Damon Dyer was declared brain dead.
The Tulsa Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into Dyer's death.
