On July 19, 1989, the body of John Kraicinsky was discovered in Flat Run Creek, located near the Marion and Morrow County line in Marion County, Ohio. Kraicinsky's remains were found behind a residence on Harding Highway East, and the circumstances of his death have remained a mystery. Initial efforts to identify the body were unsuccessful, and the case eventually went cold due to the lack of substantial leads.
In 2021, after more than three decades, the Marion County Sheriff's Office, using advances in DNA technology, was able to identify the remains of John Kraicinsky through collaboration with the DNA Doe Project, FBI, and Ohio BCI laboratories. Kraicinsky had not been reported missing by his family, as they believed he had moved away to start a new life, which contributed to the delay in identifying him. The use of genetic genealogy techniques was pivotal in finally linking the unidentified remains to Kraicinsky.
Despite the identification, the exact cause of Kraicinsky's death remains undetermined, and it is classified as a homicide.
