Jonathan Dubose, a 44-year-old Black man from Birmingham, Alabama, was killed in a late-April shooting that left investigators searching for answers in the city’s southwest area. Police were dispatched on a Monday to the 4300 block of Park Avenue Southwest, where they found him lying at the edge of the road, shot, and he died at the scene.
In the days that followed, the case was publicly framed as one with little to hold onto: investigators said they had few clues about what led to
the gunfire or who was responsible, and appeals went out for anyone who saw something—or heard something—that night to come forward. The incident was later listed among Birmingham’s homicides for 2012 with the same location and date, noting no arrest.
As his community shifted from shock to mourning, a funeral service was announced for May 11, 2012, at Eastside Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery. The obituary notice tied his passing to April 30, 2012, anchoring the tragedy to a single date even as the circumstances behind it remained unresolved.
