Calvin Upchurch Jr., aged 19, was shot and killed on August 10, 2010, in Columbus, Ohio. The incident took place on the front porch of a vacant house in the 800 block of Seymour Avenue on the city's east side. At approximately 7:30 a.m., Calvin was found lying on the porch and was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Five years prior, his 11-year-old sister, Da'Aunte Upchurch, had been struck by a stray bullet while she was watching television at home. Calvin's father, who had since become a minister, expressed his grief, stating, "He wasn't a bad kid; he just got caught up with the wrong people and the wrong crowds." Despite efforts to steer his son away from a dangerous lifestyle, Calvin's involvement with the wrong influences ended in his untimely death.
Local residents described the neighborhood as resembling a "warzone," with gunfire being a common occurrence day and night. Neighbors heard shots ring out earlier that morning, though police were not called to the scene until after Calvin's body was discovered. The investigation remains open, with no arrests made in connection to the shooting at the time. Authorities continue to search for leads that might bring justice to Calvin and his family.
