Phat Vinh Cao Le, also known as Phat Le, was only 20 years old when he was tragically shot and killed outside his home on 23rd Street in Oakland, California, on October 10, 2009. Le was returning home from work when the incident took place. It is believed that the motive for the shooting may have been a robbery attempt, as the suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Investigators suspect that a second individual was involved, serving as a getaway driver for the gunman. Despite this, no suspects have been arrested, and the case remains unsolved.
Phat Le was remembered by friends and family as a positive and hardworking individual, known for his time as a high school athlete, particularly in Pop Warner football. Le’s father, Kevin Le, an immigrant and Vietnam War veteran, brought his son to the United States for a better life. During a press conference marking five years since the murder, Kevin made an emotional plea to the community to help identify those responsible for his son's death. He described Phat as a "good kid" who had no known enemies, wasn't involved in gangs, and did not owe money to anyone. Kevin Le expressed his determination to get justice for his son, appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
The Oakland Police Department and Phat Le’s family continue to seek justice, and Crime Stoppers of Oakland has increased the reward for information leading to an arrest to $25,000. The authorities hope that time may have lessened any fear that might have initially prevented witnesses from speaking up. To honor Phat Le's memory, a candlelight vigil was held at the location where he was killed, with family and community members gathering to remember him and continue advocating for justice.
