Kathleen Walker, 73, died of stab wounds in a case that was ruled a homicide on Monday, June 1, 2020. The attack itself happened more than two months earlier, on the evening of Wednesday, March 18, 2020, inside the University of Maryland Medical Center at 22 South Greene Street in Baltimore. The Baltimore Police Department investigated, and the Baltimore Sun's homicide database lists her death as a homicide, with the June date reflecting when it was ruled a homicide rather than when she was
hurt.
The Sun's note on the case gives the only public account of what happened. According to that note, the killing "occurred on March 18, 2020 at 9:30 p.m. inside University of Maryland Medical Center when a 15-year-old patient fatally stabbed a fellow patient in another room." That means Kathleen Walker was herself a patient in the hospital at the time, and that the person who attacked her was a teenager who was also being treated there. The note does not say why either of them was in the hospital, how the teenager came to be in her room, or what was used in the attack.
Beyond that, almost nothing about Kathleen Walker has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser that clearly belongs to her could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on her death in detail. Kathleen Walker is a fairly common name, and the obituaries that turn up in searches belong to other women in other states. She surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who she was, but none of that has entered the public record.
Because so little has been released, many basic questions remain open. The record does not say whether she died in the hospital in the weeks after the attack or somewhere else, why the ruling took until June, or what happened to the teenager afterward. Because the attacker was a juvenile, any case may have been handled in juvenile court, where records are usually not public, which may explain why nothing appears in news archives. None of that is confirmed.
The University of Maryland Medical Center is the main teaching hospital of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and sits on the west side of downtown near the university's professional schools. It is home to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, which treats many of the most seriously injured patients in Maryland. A killing inside the hospital, of one patient by another, is a rare event, and it happened in the early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic.
After the unrest of 2015, Baltimore recorded more than 300 homicides a year for eight straight years, and the share of killings that ended in an arrest fell sharply.
No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Kathleen Walker could be found in news archives or public records. More than six years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. The Sun's note says a teenage patient carried out the attack, but no public record shows what happened to that case. Anyone who was a patient, visitor or staff member at the University of Maryland Medical Center in March 2020, or who knows what became of the investigation, may hold information that matters to her family. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward.
