James Clifford Parker, a 74-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Mansfield, Texas, was a man known for his quiet generosity, deep faith, and life of service. A beloved husband, he and his wife, Darlene, had been married for 44 years and were best friends. At his church, New Life Fellowship in Arlington, Texas, he was a respected mentor and father figure who served in the production ministry, preferring to work behind the scenes.
James was also dedicated to helping fellow veterans receive the benefits they had earned. His pastor, Maurice Pugh, remembered him as a peaceful person who would go out of his way to help anyone.
In October 2026, James and Darlene traveled to Arkansas, a state he loved, for the homecoming celebration at his alma mater, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The night before their trip, they attended a Bible study at their church, where James asked for prayers for traveling grace. On Thursday, October 15, their journey took a devastating turn in Little Rock. Darlene had forgotten a prescription, so they stopped to have it filled at a pharmacy. While she went inside, James drove their car across the street to a gas station at 6201 Colonel Glenn Road.
As James waited at the gas station, a violent shootout erupted between multiple people. He was caught in the crossfire and fatally wounded. When James didn't return or answer his phone, a worried Darlene walked outside and saw the gas station surrounded by police vehicles. She approached officers, explaining that she feared her husband might be injured and gave them his description. A short time later, the police confirmed her worst fears. A second person, 19-year-old Ladontae Wilburn, was also killed in the exchange of gunfire, and several others were wounded.
The Little Rock Police Department responded to the scene and launched a homicide investigation. The tragic incident, which took the life of an innocent visitor to the city, shocked both the local community and James's community back in Texas. Investigators quickly identified suspects in the deadly shootout.
Authorities arrested two men in connection with the shooting. Kevontae Wilburn, 19, and Braxton Flowers, 25, were taken into custody. Both men were charged with capital murder for their roles in the incident that led to the deaths of James Parker and Ladontae Wilburn. Flowers faced an additional charge of first-degree murder. The case then moved into the judicial system for prosecution.
The sudden and violent loss left James's family and friends heartbroken. "I’ve known him 46 years. We’ve been married 44 years. He was my partner and my best friend," Darlene shared through their pastor. "I don’t know what life will be like without him, but prayers are keeping me together." Pastor Pugh added, "You wouldn’t think someone who's peaceful, someone who tries to help, go out of their way to help people would actually be killed in that way, in that moment." A memorial service was planned in Little Rock for October 31, with another to be held in Dallas at a later date. As of October 2026, the case against the accused was proceeding through the court system.
