Derrianna Monae Brown, an 18-year-old female, was remembered for her warmth and thoughtfulness by those who loved her. Born on July 26, 2008, she was deeply loved by her mother, Tamika Brown, and her wider family. A GoFundMe page created to support her family described her as a young woman with her whole life ahead of her, whose memory would be carried forever by everyone who knew her.
Her unexpected death left her family heartbroken, facing a loss for which nothing could have prepared them.
On the evening of Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Derrianna was visiting friends at a residence in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on Chicago's Northwest Side. She and several other teenagers were gathered in the home while the parents of the resident were out of town. Around 8:50 p.m., the gathering took a tragic turn. Chicago police officers responded to a call of a person shot at a home in the 2700 block of South Monitor Avenue. When they arrived, they found Derrianna in the basement of the residence with a single, devastating gunshot wound to her head.
Paramedics rushed Derrianna to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, but her injury was too severe. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, turning a night among friends into a scene of loss and investigation. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed her identity and cause of death. The circumstances of the shooting remained shrouded in uncertainty in the immediate aftermath.
Detectives from Chicago Police Department's Area 5 began an immediate and intensive investigation into the shooting. They worked to piece together the events that led to Derrianna’s death, trying to understand what happened inside the basement. Investigators questioned a juvenile male who was considered a person of interest in the case. However, he was later released without any charges being filed. Police recovered a single shell casing from the basement, but as of late October 2026, no one was in custody.
A central and unanswered question for both the authorities and Derrianna’s grieving family was whether the shooting was a deliberate act or a tragic accident. Detectives have continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, leaving the case open. The lack of clarity has only compounded the pain for a family already grappling with the sudden and violent loss of a young woman just beginning her adult life.
In the wake of her death, Derrianna’s family was faced with the overwhelming task of arranging her farewell. A fundraiser was organized by a family member to help her mother, Tamika, cover the costs of a memorial gathering and other living expenses, allowing her time to grieve without the added pressure of financial worries. The family expressed their gratitude for the prayers and support they received. A visitation was held on Friday, October 30, 2026, at the Katrina S. Bates Funeral Home, followed by a wake and funeral service the next day at the Home of Life MB Church. Derrianna Monae Brown was laid to rest at Oakridge Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois. Her case remains unsolved.
