Ernesto Gilbert Rodriguez, a 28-year-old man from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was known by loved ones for the joy he brought to those around him and the positive influence he had on their lives. Born on March 3, 1998, Ernesto was cherished by a large and loving family. He is remembered by his parents, Luis F. Rodriguez, Jr. and Elizabeth "Lisy" Ayala; his companion, Chantelle Heaps; numerous brothers and sisters; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and
cousins. His family recalled the many shared moments and relationships he built throughout his life.
The morning of Saturday, October 10, 2026, began with a sense of dread for Ernesto and his girlfriend. In the early hours, they received threatening messages on social media, believed to be from his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Tobias John-Allen Click. The messages explicitly threatened to kill them both. While his girlfriend wanted to call the police immediately, Ernesto convinced her to wait. Shortly after 6 a.m., their worst fears were realized when they awoke to find Click had broken into their apartment at the Country Club Apartments in the 400 block of Aaron Lane in East Lampeter Township.
Surveillance footage from inside the home showed Click entering through a downstairs living room. Upon seeing the intruder, Ernesto attempted to retrieve a handgun to defend himself and his family. Before he could reach his weapon, Click shot him multiple times. After fatally wounding Ernesto, Click turned the gun on his ex-girlfriend, who was with her four children. He held the family hostage at gunpoint, repeatedly threatening to kill her. As Ernesto lay motionless on the floor, Click brutally kicked him in the head.
The terrifying hostage situation continued as the woman received several phone calls. After initially trying to silence her phone, Click ordered her to answer. She was able to inform Click that the police were on their way. Hearing that law enforcement was responding, Click fled the apartment, threatening to kill himself. When officers from the East Lampeter Township Police Department arrived, they found Ernesto Rodriguez deceased inside the home from multiple gunshot wounds. The woman and her four children were physically unharmed.
An immediate and widespread search for Tobias Click was launched. The East Lampeter Township Police contacted the Pennsylvania State Police, who used cellphone data to track Click's movements through Franklin and Cumberland counties. State troopers spotted his vehicle traveling northbound on Interstate 81 and initiated a traffic stop around 11:11 a.m. Click refused to stop, leading police on a multi-county pursuit that ended in the Harrisburg area, near Arsenal Boulevard and Herr Street. After his vehicle was stopped, Click did not respond to troopers' commands. A police drone was used to observe the vehicle's interior, where Click appeared unresponsive.
When troopers approached the vehicle, they found Click with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and a 9mm Glock pistol in his hand. He was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Before he died, the Lancaster County District Attorney's office filed a host of charges against him, including first-degree murder, burglary, kidnapping, and abuse of a corpse. On Sunday, October 11, at 8:25 a.m., Tobias John-Allen Click was pronounced dead by the Cumberland County Coroner's Office.
Family and friends gathered to honor Ernesto's memory. A visitation and funeral service were held on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the Iglesia church in Lancaster, followed by a burial at Mellinger's Mennonite Cemetery the next day. In the wake of the tragedy, his loved ones reflected on the bonds he created and the enduring comfort his memory would provide.
With the death of the sole suspect, the East Lampeter Township Police Department announced that the homicide investigation was closed. As of October 2026, authorities confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public. The department publicly thanked the Pennsylvania State Police, the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office, the Lancaster County Forensic Team, and the West Lampeter Township Police for their crucial involvement in the case.
