Shawne Maurice Miller, a beloved father, author, and visionary storyteller known affectionately as “Cap,” was a man whose creativity and contagious laugh left a lasting mark on everyone he knew. The 53-year-old Columbus, Ohio native was a male who found his calling in expressing his unique perspective through words and music. A lifelong passion for writing that began in high school blossomed into a new chapter of his life as a published author.
He was excited about the future, having released his book "Elijah and the Church of Shadows" and eager to share more of his voice with the world. His family remembered him as a "good dude" who never let his younger brother forget he was the big brother.
On the night of Sunday, October 4, 2026, that future was cut short. Columbus police officers were dispatched to an apartment complex on the 3600 block of Seabrook Avenue on the city's East Side around 11:00 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. At the scene, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics arrived, but Shawne could not be saved and was pronounced dead at 11:09 p.m. The second man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Investigators with the Columbus Police Department quickly determined that the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute. Family members later confirmed the deeply tragic nature of the incident, stating that the altercation was between Shawne and his son, who lived with him. His family also confirmed that his son was the second person found with gunshot wounds and was recovering in the hospital from his critical injuries. The situation left his loved ones grappling with an unimaginable loss. "You and your own son? I don't know, we can't process it," his brother, Jamaal Miller, said. "Like, you already got a loss and then [you have to process] how the loss happened."
The Columbus Police Department's Homicide Unit is handling the ongoing investigation. As of early October 2026, authorities had not released further details or announced any charges in the case. They have asked for the public's help, urging anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or to provide an anonymous tip to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477. The family is caught between grief and the complicated reality of the tragedy. "That's why I say it's a tragedy all the way around," said his uncle, Bernard Wright Jr., who was only three years older than Shawne and felt more like a brother. "You wanna be mad at somebody, but you can't be mad because that other person is your family."
Beyond his creative pursuits, Shawne was a man who enjoyed life's simple moments, whether it was spending time with loved ones, going to the gym, or making people laugh on TikTok. Above all, he was a devoted father. His memory lives on in the hearts of his children: Dominique Miller, Deshawne Miller, Drew Miller, and Derek Tartt. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Mya and Taylor Tartt; his mother, Diantha Miller; his father, Ricky Stargell; a brother and sister; and many other relatives and friends. His family recalled his vibrant personality and the good life he lived, filled with friends and family. "His laugh was contagious [and] loud," Jamaal Miller remembered.
A visitation and funeral service were held for Shawne on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Chapel of Peace in Columbus. His obituary describes a legacy that extends far beyond his years, a journey of "imagination, resilience, discovery, and growth." It reads, "Though his physical presence will be deeply missed, his words will continue to speak, his stories will continue to inspire, and his memory will remain alive in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched." The investigation into his death continues.
