Michael Torchia was an adventurous and passionate man who loved animals, fitness, and learning. As the son of a military family, 31-year-old Michael grew up in several states, an experience that fueled his love for exploring. He was born on May 22, 1995, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Linden and Diane Torchia. Of all the places he lived, he loved Hawaii the most, cherishing the family time spent on the beach, the beautiful scenery, and the year-round warm weather.
After graduating from Grovetown High School, he began college to pursue a degree in nutrition, though his studies were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michael developed a passion for gardening, cooking, and learning new languages, particularly Italian. He was a bodybuilder for about three years and dedicated time to the gym. A devoted animal lover, he cared for chickens, ducks, and six beloved dogs, enjoying the time he spent nurturing them and watching them grow. He was also an avid reader of the bible and, with a keen memory, could quote many scripture verses. His family remembers him as a son, brother, and friend who lived life with passion and Jesus in his heart.
On the evening of September 28, 2026, an argument between Michael and his father turned tragic in Hot Spring County, Arkansas. Around 7 p.m., deputies from the Hot Spring County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a reported shooting in the 300 block of Bayne Road, just outside Malvern. According to witnesses, the incident began while 70-year-old Linden Torchia was trying to help his son, Michael, jump-start a vehicle.
A verbal disagreement between the father and son escalated into a physical altercation. Investigators were told that Michael began arguing with his father and then struck the window of Linden's vehicle with a set of jumper cables and another unidentified metal object. During the confrontation, Linden Torchia fired a weapon, striking Michael in the chest. When deputies arrived, they found Michael gravely wounded. The Hot Spring County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Hot Spring County Sheriff's Office requested that the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division take the lead on the case. Special Agents began investigating the circumstances of the fatal shooting. Michael’s body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine an official cause and manner of death. As of late September 2026, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting.
Investigators compiled a case file to be presented to the Hot Spring County Prosecuting Attorney, who will review the evidence and decide whether any charges are warranted. The investigation by the Arkansas State Police remains ongoing.
Michael Torchia is survived by his father, Linden Torchia; his mother, Diane Johnson; and his two sisters, Hillary Fleiss and Kelsey Fowler. A memorial service to celebrate his life was held on October 9, 2026, at Regency Funeral Home in Malvern, with a visitation for friends and family preceding the service. He was remembered as a man who will be greatly loved and missed. The case remains under review by the prosecuting attorney's office.
