Khemari Javon Perry was a thoughtful and warm young man, remembered by his family for his good heart. Born on November 23, 2004, the 21-year-old male always made sure to check in on his mother, Danielle Perry. In a statement after his death, she said, "No one is perfect, we all make mistakes but he matters. I miss my baby so much." His family and friends recall the positive influence he had on their lives and the meaningful moments they shared together.
The weekend of his death began
with a police call that seemed, at first, to lead nowhere. On Saturday, September 26, 2026, at approximately 12:52 p.m., officers from the Greensboro Police Department responded to reports of shots fired in the 5600 block of Weslo-Willow Circle, near the Edgewater Village Apartments. Upon arrival, they searched the area but found no victims, suspects, or evidence of a crime. Later that same day, concern grew within Khemari’s family when they could not reach him, and a family member officially reported him missing to the police.
The following day, Sunday, September 27, another call brought emergency personnel back to the same block. At around 5:51 p.m., a report of suspicious activity led officers, Greensboro Fire, and Guilford County EMS to a wooded area just north of Weslo-Willow Circle. There, they discovered Khemari unresponsive. He had sustained trauma consistent with at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. The crime scene remained active for many hours, with investigators working until after 1:30 a.m. on Monday morning.
The Greensboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division launched a homicide investigation into Khemari's death, which marked the city's 21st homicide of 2026. Investigators have not publicly released information about a possible motive or identified any suspects in the shooting. It also remains unclear if the shots reported on Saturday were connected to Khemari's death. The case is an active and ongoing investigation.
In the aftermath, Khemari's family expressed both profound grief and frustration. His mother pleaded for the person responsible to come forward, stating, "It's only a matter of time because we will get justice." Other family members questioned the initial police response, believing more could have been done when the first 911 call was made. A police spokesperson issued a statement assuring that the department planned to remain in communication with the family as the investigation progressed.
To help with funeral and burial costs, Khemari’s mother started a GoFundMe campaign, writing that no parent should have to endure such pain and that she wanted to lay her son to rest in a proper and dignified way. His funeral services were entrusted to Allen & Associates Mortuary/Cremation, LLC, with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.
