Case Description

Any updates on this case? Let us know!
Kevin Milton was 41 years old when he died on Saturday, April 7, 2007, in Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department case handled by the department's 77th Street Division.

He was a Black man in his early 40s. Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Kevin Milton has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. His name is a fairly common one, and searches turned up only other men who share it in other states, none of them connected to this death.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect. The public record does not even include the address or the block where he was hurt, which leaves anyone who might remember the incident without the most basic point of reference.

The 77th Street Division covers a large part of South Los Angeles, a dense area of modest single-family homes, apartment buildings, churches and small businesses lining long commercial corridors. It has been home for generations to working families, many of whom have lived in the same houses for decades and know their neighbors well.

That does not mean the people who knew Kevin Milton have forgotten him. Somewhere there are relatives who lost a son, a brother, a father or a cousin in the spring of 2007, and friends who noticed that he was suddenly gone. Some of them may have heard an account of what happened that never reached investigators.

Homicides in Los Angeles fell steeply in the late 2000s and early 2010s, yet many killings from those years were never solved. The death of a 41-year-old man in South Los Angeles was recorded in the Homicide Report with only his name, age and cause of death, and it does not appear to have been covered by any news outlet.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Kevin Milton could be found in news archives or public records. More than 18 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew Kevin Milton, or who lived or worked in South Los Angeles in early April 2007 and remembers a man being beaten or badly hurt around that time, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
