On May 7, 2000, Ryan Gonzalez, a 16-year-old Latino male, was fatally shot while walking home from a party in the 3300 block of Silver Lake Boulevard in the Atwater Village neighborhood of Los Angeles. The area was known territory of the Toonerville gang. Gonzalez was a member of the rival Rascals gang and shared the street nickname 'Huero' with Timothy Joseph McGhee, a 27-year-old reputed leader of the Toonerville gang.
Investigators believe that McGhee's motive for the murder was rooted in gang rivalry and a personal vendetta over the shared nickname.
Following the murder, an arrest warrant was issued for McGhee in June 2000. However, he evaded capture for several years, during which he was implicated in multiple other crimes, including additional murders and attempted murders. McGhee was eventually apprehended and went on trial in 2007 for the murders of Ryan Gonzalez and others. In 2009, he was convicted and sentenced to death for his crimes.
