Miguel Lopez was 34 years old when he died on Friday, August 10, 2007, in Highland Park, in northeast Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 5039 Monte Vista Street. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department case, with the Homicide Report naming the Foothill Division as the agency.

He was a Latino man in his mid-30s. Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Miguel Lopez has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. His name is one of the most common Spanish names in Southern California, and searches turned up only other men who share it, among them a man killed in Los Angeles in 2014 in an unrelated case, a baseball player and men charged with crimes in other states.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect. The record gives a street address, which suggests the injuries may have happened at or near a home, though it does not say whether he lived there.

The Homicide Report entry for Miguel consisted of a single sentence drawn from coroner's records. That was common in 2007, when the Times tried to list every homicide in Los Angeles County, but it means the public record holds only the barest outline of what happened.

Highland Park is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, set in the hills along the Arroyo Seco between downtown and Pasadena. It is known for its Craftsman bungalows and Victorian houses, the historic commercial strip along Figueroa Street, and York Boulevard. For decades it was a largely Latino, working-class neighborhood with deep family roots. Monte Vista Street is a residential street that runs through the neighborhood, lined with older homes and small apartment buildings.

Homicides in Los Angeles fell steeply in the late 2000s and early 2010s, yet many killings from those years were never solved. A one-line notice in the Homicide Report is the only public trace of his death that could be found.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Miguel Lopez could be found in news archives or public records. More than 18 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived on or near Monte Vista Street in August 2007, or who knew a 34-year-old man named Miguel Lopez in Highland Park, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
