Kien Queng Vuong was 49 years old when he died on Saturday, January 27, 2007. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as an Alhambra Police Department case, which indicates that the injuries that killed him were investigated in the city of Alhambra.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report described him only as an Asian man of 49. Unlike most entries, his gave no street address, no block number and no intersection. It did not say what happened to him or whether investigators had a suspect.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Kien Queng Vuong has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

The record also leaves open whether he lived in Alhambra or was only passing through, and whether he was hurt in a home, a business or a public place. The lack of an address is unusual, and it means that even the part of the city where he was injured cannot be described with any confidence.

His surname is shared by many families in Southern California, and searches for it return obituaries and records for people in California, Washington and elsewhere, none of whom can be connected to him. The middle name Queng is much rarer, but it does not appear in any public account of his life or death.

Alhambra is a city of about 80,000 people in the western San Gabriel Valley, a few miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is a largely residential city, with tree-lined streets of older homes and apartment buildings, and Main Street serves as its traditional downtown. Over recent decades the western San Gabriel Valley has become home to one of the largest Asian American communities in the United States, and Alhambra's restaurants, markets and businesses reflect that.

Alhambra has its own police department, which investigates killings within the city.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Kien Queng Vuong could be found in news archives or public records. More than 18 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew him, worked with him, or saw or heard about a beating or an assault in Alhambra in late January 2007 may hold information that could help investigators. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Alhambra Police Department, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
