Darien Lamour Thompson was 2 years old when he died on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 3730 West 27th Street. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a case of the Los Angeles Police Department's Juvenile Division.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report recorded only the most basic facts about his death: his name, his age, the date, the address and the cause. It described him as a Black boy of 2. It did not say how he was hurt, who was caring for him, whether the address was his home, or whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital.

Beyond his name, his age and the address where he died, almost nothing about Darien has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on his death. Searches for his name turned up only namesakes, among them athletes and students in other states and people listed as relatives in obituaries far from Los Angeles. None of those pages concerns the little boy who died in Jefferson Park. A child so young had no life outside his family and the people who cared for him, and whatever is remembered about him lives with them.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances of his death remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was hurt at the address on 27th Street or brought there, who was with him when he was injured, or whether investigators ever identified anyone they believed was responsible. The assignment of the case to the Juvenile Division, rather than to a regular homicide unit, reflects that the victim was a child; the record says nothing more about what detectives found.

The death of a young child from blunt force trauma is among the hardest kinds of cases to investigate. There are rarely outside witnesses, the injuries may not be discovered right away, and medical experts must work to establish when and how a child was hurt. Cases like these can stay open for years while investigators and prosecutors weigh the medical evidence.

Jefferson Park is a residential neighborhood in the historic West Adams area of Los Angeles. It is known for its blocks of early 20th century Craftsman bungalows, many of which are protected under a historic preservation overlay zone. The neighborhood has long been home to Black families and has a growing Latino population, and in recent years rising home prices have brought new residents. West 27th Street is one of its quiet residential streets.

Homicides in Los Angeles fell steeply in the late 2000s and early 2010s, yet many killings from those years were never solved.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Darien Lamour Thompson could be found in news archives or public records. More than 17 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived near West 27th Street in Jefferson Park in July 2008, or who knew Darien and the people who cared for him, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
