Jesus Cruz was 36 years old when he died on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, five days after he was assaulted in East Hollywood. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 1075 N. Western Ave. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department Hollywood Division case.

He was hurt on New Year's Day. Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, told the Los Angeles Times that Cruz was attacked on Jan. 1 in the 1000 block of North Western Avenue. He was knocked to the ground and struck his head on the concrete, causing a blunt force injury, Winter said. Cruz was taken to a hospital, where he died at 4:15 p.m. on Jan. 6.

The short account suggests that the fatal injury may have come from the fall rather than from the blow itself, a pattern seen in many deaths after a single punch. Even so, a death caused by an assault is treated as a homicide, and whoever knocked him down could face criminal charges.

What the report does not say is just as important. It does not say what time of day he was attacked, whether he was alone, whether he knew the person who hit him, or whether the attack began as an argument, a robbery or something else. It does not say whether anyone saw it, or whether police ever identified a suspect.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he was hurt, almost nothing about Jesus Cruz has been made public. Jesus Cruz is one of the most common names in the Spanish-speaking world, and searches for it turn up baseball players, students, defendants in other states and dozens of obituaries. A paid obituary for a Jesus Cruz was published in the Los Angeles Times in February 2010, but it could not be confirmed that it was for this man.

East Hollywood is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles, a district of apartment buildings, small businesses and busy commercial streets east of central Hollywood. Western Avenue is one of the city's longest north-south roads, and the stretch through East Hollywood is lined with shops, restaurants and bus stops that stay busy into the night, all the more so on a holiday like New Year's Day.

Homicides in Los Angeles fell steeply in the late 2000s and early 2010s, yet many killings from those years were never solved.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Jesus Cruz could be found in news archives or public records. More than 15 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was on North Western Avenue on Jan. 1, 2010, who saw a man knocked to the sidewalk, or who later heard someone talk about the fight, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
