Bryan Manuel Olmos was 1 year old when he was pronounced dead on Monday, June 20, 2011, two days after he was hurt in East Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma in the 700 block of Harding Avenue. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau case.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report described him as a Latino boy and gave a fuller account than most entries. The child "sustained multiple injuries at a residence," said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office. Sheriff's homicide Det. Louie Aguilera, who handled the case, said Bryan lived at the home with his mother and several other people. The residents said he began having trouble breathing. They alerted authorities, who took him to Beverly Hospital in Montebello. Because of the extent of his injuries, he was then taken to Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach. Aguilera said Bryan suffered blunt force trauma to his body and was unable to recover. He was pronounced dead at the hospital on June 20 at 3 p.m.

Investigators said there was no indication of previous injuries and that the family had no history with the Department of Children and Family Services. Aguilera was direct about what the injuries meant. "It was clear someone intended to harm the child; however, no arrests have been made," the Times reported. "The investigation is ongoing."

That account narrows the circle considerably. The injuries were inflicted at a home, on a child too young to leave it on his own, in a household shared by several people. The Times did not say who was at the residence when he was hurt, and no later report named a suspect. The lack of earlier injuries suggests the harm may have come in a single episode rather than over a long period, but that is an inference only.

No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser for Bryan could be found for this story, and no follow-up news coverage appears to exist. Searches for his name turn up only unrelated people, including an attorney, a high school athlete and a schoolchild in Alabama.

East Los Angeles is a large unincorporated community just east of the city of Los Angeles, known for Whittier Boulevard, Cesar Chavez Avenue and a long history as a center of Mexican American life in Southern California. It has no city government of its own, and the Sheriff's Department patrols it from its East Los Angeles Station.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Bryan Manuel Olmos could be found in news archives or public records. More than 14 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived near or visited the 700 block of Harding Avenue in East Los Angeles in June 2011, or who heard talk of what happened to the boy, may hold information that could help detectives. The Times asked anyone with information to contact Det. Aguilera at 890-5500. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
