Edgar Aurelio Velasquez was 26 years old when he died on Monday, August 15, 2016, in Cudahy. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma in the 7700 block of Atlantic Avenue. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau case.

His death drew brief coverage the next day. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives went to the 7700 block of Atlantic Avenue around 11:30 p.m. that Monday, Deputy Kelvin Moody said, according to City News Service. ABC7 reported that the detectives "found a dead man" there, and the coroner later identified him as Edgar Velasquez, 26, of Cudahy. He died at the scene, coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said.

Authorities said Velasquez "had suffered blunt-force trauma injuries to his head and body." At that point an autopsy was still pending to determine the cause of death, and investigators did not say what had killed him. Deputy Crystal Hernandez of the Sheriff's Information Bureau said investigators were "looking into the possibility of foul play." The coroner later ruled the death a homicide. Detectives did not release a description of a suspect, a motive or any details about how he came to be hurt, and the reports do not say whether he was found outdoors or inside a building.

No follow-up reports appear to have been published. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found, and Edgar Velasquez is a common name across Southern California and Latin America, which makes it difficult to trace the life of one man who carried it. The news reports confirm only that he lived in Cudahy, the city where he died. He surely had family and friends there who remember him, but none of that has entered the public record.

Cudahy is a small city in southeast Los Angeles County, one of the smallest in the county by land area and one of the most densely populated. It sits near the Los Angeles River among neighboring cities such as Bell, South Gate and Huntington Park. Cudahy contracts with the Sheriff's Department for law enforcement rather than running its own police department. Atlantic Avenue is one of its main streets, lined with shops, restaurants and apartment buildings, and it stays busy late into the evening.

A young man hurt on a commercial street late on a weeknight may have been seen by more people than investigators ever reached. Drivers, neighbors and people leaving nearby businesses might have noticed an argument, a fight or a vehicle leaving quickly without realizing that what they saw ended in a death.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Edgar Aurelio Velasquez could be found in news archives or public records. More than nine years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was on Atlantic Avenue in Cudahy on the night of August 15, 2016, or who knew Edgar Velasquez, may hold information that could help investigators. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward.
