The winter days just before the holidays in 2001 were shadowed by violence across eastern Los Angeles County. In the city of Pomona, a community situated against the backdrop of the Pomona Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains, investigators were called to address yet another fatal incident during an already demanding year. On Saturday, December 22, 2001, Michael Robert Ramirez lost his life in an outdoor space tucked away in a residential neighborhood. He was twenty-four years old.

The fatal encounter occurred in the rear of a property located at 740 Altura Court. Altura Court is a short, quiet residential cul-de-sac situated just south of West Holt Avenue and west of San Antonio Avenue, framed by modest single-family homes and apartment residences. The secluded area behind the address became an active crime scene as patrol officers and crime scene technicians cordoned off the perimeter, searching the immediate grounds for shell casings, biological evidence, discarded weapons, or any personal effects that could reconstruct what had taken place.

First responders arriving at the scene discovered Ramirez unresponsive behind the Altura Court property. Despite emergency measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner took custody of the body and conducted an examination to establish the precise manner and mechanism of his death. Official county records subsequently classified the death as a homicide, while the exact primary cause of death was designated in public tallies as other and was never further detailed to the press.

Homicide investigators with the Pomona Police Department assumed primary jurisdiction over the investigation. Detectives canvassed neighboring homes along Altura Court and adjacent streets, seeking witnesses who might have seen people moving in and out of the rear yard or heard unusual disturbances in the hours leading up to the discovery. In cases occurring away from open thoroughfares, detectives frequently face heightened difficulties in identifying individuals who entered or fled through back alleys, side gates, or private easements.

The year 2001 saw elevated rates of violent crime throughout southern California communities, placing heavy caseload burdens on local detective bureaus like Pomona's. In the weeks and months following the killing, investigators pursued available leads and evaluated potential physical evidence gathered from the rear of the lot. However, no public descriptions of potential suspects or suspect vehicles were disseminated, and no individual was ever arrested or formally charged in connection with the fatal incident.

More than two decades later, the circumstances that brought about the death of Michael Robert Ramirez remain an open mystery. The Pomona Police Department continues to handle investigations into unresolved killings from that era, encouraging anyone who holds information regarding the events of December 22, 2001, at 740 Altura Court to contact detectives or provide tips through regional crime reporting networks.
