On Thursday, September 11, 2008, firefighters were dispatched to a reported vehicle fire in an industrial stretch of Rancho Dominguez, an unincorporated community in southern Los Angeles County. When emergency personnel arrived at the scene along the 19200 block of Laurel Park Road, they found an automobile engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the blaze, crew members made a grim discovery inside the vehicle. Packed into the trunk was the body of a man who had suffered fatal trauma before the vehicle was set ablaze.

The victim was soon identified as 49-year-old Antonio Greene, a Black man who lived in the Los Angeles area. Greene had been unemployed, and investigators noted that his family was already deeply concerned for his welfare. On the very day his body was discovered by firefighters, his parents and siblings had contacted authorities to file a missing persons report after losing contact with him, unaware that he had met with violence only hours earlier.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau took charge of the investigation. Detective Kevin Lowe, who led the inquiry, observed that Greene was a physically large man and likely did not end up in the trunk of his car without putting up a significant fight. The circumstances strongly suggested that Greene had been ambushed, incapacitated, or confronted by more than one assailant before his body was placed into his own car, transported to Laurel Park Road, and torched in an attempt to destroy forensic evidence.

Despite the brutal nature of the crime, homicide investigators found themselves working with few initial leads. The location where the car was abandoned—a corridor dominated by warehouses, commercial parks, and freight facilities near the Alameda Corridor and the 91 Freeway—saw heavy commercial traffic by day but grew deserted at night. Sheriff's investigators found no immediate eyewitnesses to the parking or torching of the vehicle, and neither a suspect nor a clear motive could be identified in the days and weeks following the murder.

The year 2008 was a challenging period for violent crime across Los Angeles County, with county homicide detectives investigating hundreds of killings, many linked to street disputes, robbery, or narcotics, while others remained baffling and obscure. In Greene's case, investigators struggled to pinpoint why anyone would harbor enough animosity toward him to commit such a calculated and horrific act. Detective Lowe appealed publicly for anyone who had seen Greene's vehicle or noticed suspicious activity along Laurel Park Road to step forward and speak with detectives.

More than a decade and a half later, the killing of Antonio Greene remains unsolved. No suspects have been publicly named or taken into custody, and no charges have ever been filed in connection with his death. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau continues to seek information from members of the public who may know what transpired in Greene's final hours or who was responsible for taking his life.
