Kenneth Edward Jones, a 26-year-old African American male, was found dead on January 15, 2021, in Rancho Dominguez, California. His body was discovered near the Compton Creek riverbed, an area known for its homeless encampments. Jones had suffered blunt force trauma to the head and stab wounds to the upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later confirmed that he had been living as a vagrant at the time of his death.
Jones was born in San Diego and placed in foster care at the age of eight due to abuse from his mother and stepfather. He was later adopted by his aunt, Keisha Grier, who lived in Compton. As a teenager, Jones showed promise in the arts, attending a drawing and animation program at Fox Film in Century City. However, he struggled with drug addiction during high school, which led to periods of homelessness. He survived by shoplifting and selling stolen bicycles. In 2019, his girlfriend gave birth to a son, who was subsequently placed in foster care.
The investigation into Jones’s death revealed that he was one of three victims murdered near the same area over an eight-month span. The suspect, Tracy Walker, a 56-year-old African American male with a prior conviction for voluntary manslaughter, was arrested on February 11, 2021. Walker had been living in a tent near the Compton Creek and was known among the local homeless population by the nickname “Solo.” Surveillance footage and forensic evidence linked him to all three killings.
Walker initially denied involvement but later confessed to the murders in exchange for prosecutors dropping the death penalty. He claimed that he killed Kenneth Edward Jones after catching him attempting to steal his bicycle using bolt cutters. Walker beat and stabbed Jones in retaliation. He was charged with three counts of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. In October 2021, Walker pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 110 years to life in prison.
