On Saturday, January 12, 2013, 71-year-old Evelina Chamblee Johnson died in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Emergency responders and authorities were called to the scene at an apartment property located at 5301 11th Avenue, situated near the intersection of 54th Street and just west of the Crenshaw Boulevard corridor. Arriving personnel discovered the elderly woman deceased at the location.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner examined Johnson's death and formally ruled it a homicide. In county records, the official cause of death was cataloged under the broad category of other, and investigators have not publicly released further forensic details or specified the exact mechanism of injury that claimed her life. Following the coroner's classification, the investigation into her death was assigned to detectives within the Los Angeles Police Department's Criminal Gang Homicide Division, the specialized branch responsible for addressing complex killings across the department's South Bureau.

Before establishing her life in Los Angeles, Johnson had deep familial roots in south Louisiana. Born into a large family that originally centered around the community of Reserve in St. John the Baptist Parish, she was remembered by relatives as a devoted sister and daughter. In family notices published across the years, her siblings and extended relatives consistently noted her presence in Los Angeles, keeping connections alive across the miles even as generations grew. The loss of a family elder under violent and mysterious circumstances dealt a heavy blow to those who knew her across both states.

The neighborhood where the killing took place sits within Hyde Park, a dense urban section of South Los Angeles characterized by tree-lined residential side streets lined with craftsman homes and multi-unit apartment buildings flanked by busy commercial arteries. Over the decades, the area has grappled with high rates of violent crime and localized gang territorial conflicts, prompting constant law enforcement scrutiny and community anti-violence initiatives. In 2013 alone, dozens of homicides took place across the neighborhoods policed by the LAPD's South Bureau, placing a persistent strain on homicide investigators working multiple simultaneous crime scenes.

Despite being handled by specialized homicide investigators, Johnson's case received minimal coverage in the press, and no public descriptions of a suspect or getaway vehicle were ever released. Detectives examined the apartment and surrounding perimeter for physical clues, canvassed neighbors, and searched for potential eyewitness accounts or security camera footage from along 11th Avenue and nearby transit corridors. Nevertheless, the absence of public leads left critical questions unanswered about who entered the residence and what precipitated the deadly confrontation.

More than a decade later, the murder of Evelina Chamblee Johnson remains completely unsolved. LAPD detectives continue to seek information from anyone who lived in the vicinity of 5301 11th Avenue in January 2013 or who may possess knowledge about the events leading up to the 71-year-old woman's death. Law enforcement officials urge anyone with potential tips to contact the Los Angeles Police Department or submit an anonymous report through Crime Stoppers, hoping that someone will finally step forward to provide justice for an elderly victim whose life was cut short.
