On April 17, 2010, Stephen Powell, a 20-year-old, was tragically shot during the Pink Saturday festivities in San Francisco's Castro district. Pink Saturday is a large street celebration that occurs annually the evening before the San Francisco Pride Parade. During the event, Powell was shot multiple times, resulting in his death, and two bystanders were also injured in the incident.
The shooting happened amidst the crowded celebrations, creating confusion as hundreds of partygoers filled the area. Powell, along with two others, was struck by gunfire at the intersection of Market and Castro streets. Despite the presence of numerous people, witness cooperation was limited, which has significantly hindered the investigation. The San Francisco Police Department was initially hopeful when a suspect, Ed Perkins, was apprehended shortly after the incident. However, the investigation revealed that the handgun found on Perkins was not used in Powell's death, and witnesses did not place him directly at the scene, leading to his release without murder charges. Perkins was instead charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a loaded firearm, but the actual shooter has not been identified.
Law enforcement and community groups, such as Castro Community Patrol and the SFPD Chief’s LGBT Community Advisory Forum, have continued to call for public assistance in solving this case. They have encouraged anyone who was present at Pink Saturday in June 2010 and may have video or photographic evidence from the area near Market Street and Castro Street to come forward. It is believed that critical information may still exist among the footage and photos taken by attendees, but much of this evidence has not been submitted, possibly due to attendees coming from outside San Francisco or being unaware of the importance of their recordings.
To this day, the case remains unsolved, and it remains a source of grief for Powell’s family and the local community. The authorities and community leaders continue to push for new leads in the hopes of finally bringing the perpetrator to justice. They stress that even seemingly minor pieces of evidence could prove vital in solving Stephen Powell's homicide.
