May 2, 2007: the body of a newborn female was discovered in the 6400 block of Bigelow Street in Lakewood, California. Coroner records and news reports list the infant, identified as Haley Ryan Anderson-Fernando, as a day-old girl whose cause of death was listed as strangulation. The body was found in a pile of clothing in a hamper by the grandmother of the woman authorities believed to be the mother.
The Los Angeles County coroner identified the infant as being of Filipino descent. Coroner records reported that the woman believed to be the mother denied having given birth; the coroner’s report lists the death as a homicide. Homicide investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and conducted the initial investigation.
At the time of contemporary reporting, there were no arrests in the case. News accounts from May 2007 note that homicide investigators were at the scene and that no arrests had been made; subsequent public reporting located during this review did not identify any arrest, charge, or later closure of the investigation. Because available public records and contemporary news coverage do not report a suspect being charged, convicted, or otherwise officially identified as the perpetrator, the death remains an unsolved homicide in the public record.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which handled the investigation, or to provide tips through whatever tip line the LASD or the Los Angeles County coroner’s office maintain for cold-case or homicide information.
