In the early morning hours of September 5, 2026, a quiet Maywood, California neighborhood was disturbed by the sight of smoke billowing from a two-story residence on East 61st Street. The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to reports of the fire at approximately 2:25 a.m. Upon extinguishing the flames, firefighters and sheriff's deputies made a grim discovery inside a bedroom that transformed a house fire investigation into a homicide case.
Inside, they found the bodies of three individuals, all of whom had sustained gunshot wounds.
The victims were identified as 7-year-old Latino male Elias Avants, his mother Jeannette Avants, 48, and his father, Thomas Avants, 48. The Los Angeles County coroner's office determined that Elias and his mother both died from gunshot wounds to the head, and their deaths were ruled as homicides. Thomas Avants also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department quickly concluded that the tragic event was a murder-suicide.
The investigation revealed that Thomas Avants had shot and killed his wife and young son before setting fire to their home and then turning the gun on himself. A handgun was recovered from the same room where the bodies were discovered. Authorities stated that the incident was domestic in nature and that there was no further threat to the community. This devastating event left the community in shock, as what initially appeared to be a tragic house fire was ultimately revealed to be the final act of a domestic dispute that ended three lives. The case was closed with the identification of the father as the perpetrator, leaving behind a tragic story of familial violence.
