On the evening of September 10, 2026, in the 2600 block of Breakwater Drive in Imperial, Missouri, a domestic disturbance escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 61-year-old Eric J. Koechling. Responding to a shooting report at approximately 9 p.m., Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies discovered Eric Koechling at a neighbor's residence, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper torso. He was found sitting in a lawn chair, pressing a towel to his chest in an effort to quell the bleeding. Despite being transported to a local hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect in the shooting was identified as Eric Koechling's ex-wife, 63-year-old Catherine M. Koechling. The couple had recently divorced. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Catherine Koechling barricaded herself inside her home, leading to a standoff with law enforcement that lasted for several hours. Deputies, including a SWAT team, surrounded the residence. Crisis negotiators were able to make contact with Catherine, who eventually surrendered to authorities without further incident.

Following her surrender, Catherine M. Koechling was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action. Authorities have indicated that these charges could be upgraded pending the results of an autopsy. She is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond. The investigation into the death of Eric J. Koechling remains ongoing. This case represents a tragic outcome to a domestic dispute between a recently divorced couple, culminating in a fatal shooting and a tense standoff with law enforcement before the suspect's apprehension. The legal proceedings are in their early stages, with the initial charges filed and the potential for more serious charges to come as the investigation progresses.
