In the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, a deeply disturbing incident unfolded, leaving a family shattered and a community in shock. On a Thursday afternoon in September 2024, 43-year-old Tatanisha Jackson was fatally shot as she returned to her home in the 6800 block of South Cornell Avenue. The tragedy was made all the more horrific by the fact that the alleged perpetrator was her own 17-year-old son, Davion Pryor. Ms. Jackson was a mother to three sons, including Davion, and also had an older stepdaughter. The events leading up to the fatal encounter began with a seemingly innocuous phone call from Pryor to his mother, complaining about someone drinking on their back porch.
What happened next was a brutal and sudden act of violence. As Tatanisha Jackson arrived home with her husband and 7-year-old son, she was met by Pryor at the front door. Prosecutors allege that at point-blank range, Pryor shot his mother multiple times in the head. The attack was witnessed by his father and younger brother. In the chaotic moments that followed, Pryor's father grabbed the younger child and ran for safety while calling 911. More gunshots were heard coming from inside the residence before Pryor fled the scene out the back door. First responders arrived to find Ms. Jackson with multiple gunshot wounds, and she was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center. At the scene, investigators recovered a gun and 12 shell casings.
Later that same evening, Davion Pryor turned himself in to the police. He was subsequently charged as an adult with first-degree murder. During his initial court appearance, a judge, who became emotional while presiding over the case, ordered Pryor to be detained and scheduled a mental health evaluation. It was revealed that Pryor has a history of mental health issues and had not been taking his medication. Furthermore, at the time of the shooting, he was on home confinement for two pending juvenile cases for aggravated battery and vehicular hijacking.
