On a summer morning in Freemansburg, Pennsylvania, the life of 27-year-old Atirah N. Steed was tragically cut short in an act of gun violence. On August 22, 2026, police responded to a 911 call at a residence on Market Street shortly after 6 a.m. Inside the home, they discovered Atirah suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the living room. Also wounded at the scene was her 45-year-old father, Alphonso Steed, who was found on the porch with gunshot wounds to his midsection and legs.
Both were rushed to St. Luke's University Hospital in Fountain Hill for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Atirah Steed was pronounced dead in the emergency department at 7:16 a.m. An autopsy later confirmed that her death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. Her father was listed in critical but stable condition following the shooting.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to the identification and arrest of a suspect who was present at the residence when police arrived. Lacole Diane Dotson, 27, of Freemansburg, was taken into custody at the scene. Investigators revealed that Dotson was the girlfriend of Alphonso Steed and that the couple had a one-year-old child together. The events leading up to the fatal shooting reportedly began with an argument the night before between Dotson and Atirah. According to a witness, the argument upset Atirah, who then went upstairs to bed. The following morning, Dotson came downstairs and expressed that she was unhappy with what had occurred the previous night. She then went back upstairs and returned with a 9mm handgun in her pocket. When Atirah questioned why she had the gun, Dotson allegedly stated it was for Atirah's father and not for her. Words were exchanged, and Atirah reportedly told Dotson that if she was going to pull the gun out, she might as well use it. A witness who went upstairs then heard multiple gunshots.
Following her arrest, Lacole Dotson was charged with criminal homicide, attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person. During an interview with State Police, Dotson admitted to retrieving her handgun from upstairs before the shooting. She claimed to have felt threatened, but also acknowledged that she had not seen Atirah with a weapon nor had a physical altercation occurred immediately before the shooting. Dotson was arraigned before a magisterial district judge and was denied bail. The Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Major Case Team is leading the ongoing investigation. As the legal proceedings have just begun, there has been no trial, conviction, or sentencing in this case. The incident represents a domestic dispute that escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving a family shattered and a community in mourning.
