In the early morning hours of July 18, 2026, the life of 28-year-old Daevin Wlodek was cut short in his Yorkville, Illinois, apartment. Police responded to a 911 call made by Wlodek's girlfriend, Lindsy Kendrick, 31, reporting that a person had been shot inside the residence. Upon arrival at the apartment on West Hydraulic Street, officers discovered Wlodek on the ground with a gunshot wound and a firearm near his feet. He was transported to a hospital in Aurora where he was pronounced dead. Kendrick, who was the only other person in the residence, was taken into custody.

Kendrick initially told investigators that Wlodek had attacked her and then shot himself during what she described as a "fit of rage" that they were both experiencing. However, the evidence at the scene and the subsequent autopsy began to tell a different story. Investigators noted that while on the phone with dispatchers, Kendrick was overheard saying, "he has a gun in there" and "he shot it," referring to Wlodek. An autopsy later determined that Wlodek died from a gunshot wound to his back that exited through his chest, a detail that made a self-inflicted wound unlikely. Adding to the suspicion, long, blonde hair was found clutched in Wlodek's right hand, and he had several scratches and bruises on his neck, hands, and legs. In contrast, police reported that Kendrick had no visible injuries.

Lindsy Kendrick was subsequently arrested and charged with six counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Prosecutors allege that Wlodek was shot in the back as he was trying to leave the apartment he shared with Kendrick. It was also revealed that at the time of the shooting, Kendrick was on probation for a prior aggravated battery conviction and her Firearm Owner's Identification card had been revoked. Kendrick is being held without bond at the Kendall County Jail. The case against her is pending in the court system, with a future court date scheduled.
