Karen Rivera, a 17-year-old female, was killed on July 26, 2026, in a double shooting outside her family's home in the 200 block of West Canino Road in north Harris County, in the Houston area. Rivera was the mother of a 2-year-old daughter and was outside the residence during what authorities described as a child-exchange confrontation involving her former boyfriend and the father of her child, Angel Javier Rodriguez. Investigators said Rodriguez, who was 19, had come to pick up their daughter when a dispute developed over his arriving without a car seat.
According to investigators, the disagreement escalated rapidly. Authorities allege that Rodriguez opened fire on Rivera, shooting her multiple times. Her older brother, Efren Alberto Sidonio, 29, came outside after hearing the gunfire and attempted to intervene and protect his sister. Rodriguez is accused of shooting Sidonio as well. Both siblings suffered fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to help them. Rivera's young daughter was present during the confrontation but was not physically injured and was later placed with relatives.
Prosecutors later presented an even more disturbing account of Rivera's final moments during Rodriguez's probable-cause hearing. According to the state's allegations, after shooting Sidonio, Rodriguez realized that Rivera was still alive. Prosecutors said Rodriguez then returned to her and shot her in the head. They told the court that Rodriguez later indicated he did not want Rivera to remain alive and be with someone else. Those statements are allegations presented by prosecutors and had not been tested at trial as of August 11, 2026.
Other family members were nearby when the shooting occurred. Rivera's mother told investigators that Rodriguez also fired toward her, although she was not struck. Rivera's aunt later said the family had been concerned about Rodriguez before the killings and that Rivera had previously tried to obtain legal protection from him. Reports also indicated that Rodriguez had earlier faced a criminal-mischief case involving allegations that he damaged or took a cellphone belonging to someone identified in court documents by the initials "K.R." That earlier charge was dismissed.
After the shootings, Rodriguez left the scene in a vehicle, prompting authorities to begin searching for him. Harris County sheriff's deputies and Humble police officers later located his vehicle in the Humble area near Will Clayton Road and Wilson Road. Rodriguez was taken into custody without further violence and booked into the Harris County Jail. His defense attorneys later disputed the characterization that he had been fleeing, saying he was stopped and arrested by police.
Rodriguez was charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of Rivera and Sidonio. At a July 29 probable-cause proceeding, a judge found sufficient cause for the prosecution to continue and ordered Rodriguez to remain in custody while prosecutors sought to have him held without bond under Texas law. His attorneys, Jose Julio Vela and Jacob Julio Vela, said they were reviewing the evidence provided by the prosecution and emphasized that the case remained at an early stage. They also characterized the events leading up to the shooting as involving a dispute over childcare and custody.

A hearing was scheduled for August 19 to determine whether he would continue to be held without bond.
