On the warm evening of July 26, 2026, in Yuba City, California, the life of 21-year-old Fernando Cortez was tragically cut short. A burst of gunfire outside a 7-Eleven on Market Street shortly before 11 p.m. left Cortez and another young man, 18-year-old Moses Mendoza, dead. The violence reportedly erupted following a physical altercation, the details of which remain part of an ongoing investigation. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found a chaotic and grim situation. Cortez was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mendoza, also suffering from a gunshot wound, was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A third individual, a 19-year-old man, was also wounded in the incident, having sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand.

The immediate aftermath of the shooting was filled with grief and questions as the families of the victims struggled to comprehend the sudden loss. The family of Moses Mendoza described him as a hardworking young man who was employed by the Yuba City Unified School District and had aspirations of joining the military. They insisted he had no criminal record or gang affiliations and believe he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Neighbors in the vicinity of the 7-Eleven reported hearing as many as 10 to 15 gunshots, a testament to the severity of the violence that unfolded that night. Small memorials of flowers and candles soon appeared at the scene, marking the spots where two young lives were lost.

In the days following the double homicide, the Yuba City Police Department, with assistance from the California Department of Justice, launched an intensive investigation. Authorities have been actively processing evidence and following up on leads in an effort to identify the person or persons responsible for the deaths of Fernando Cortez and Moses Mendoza. Despite their ongoing efforts, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the altercation and subsequent shooting remains active. This lack of resolution leaves a painful void for the families and the community, as they await answers and hope for justice to be served in the tragic and untimely deaths of the two young men.
