Juan Vallejo Corona, a Mexican-American labor contractor, was responsible for the brutal murders of 25 men, including Cupp, during a period spanning from February to May 1971. Corona targeted migrant farm workers, many of whom were transient laborers with minimal ties to the local community. He would hire these individuals for work and subsequently kill them, often employing a machete to inflict fatal injuries. The victims were then buried in shallow graves across various ranches in Sutter County, near Yuba City, California.
The discovery of these crimes began on May 19, 1971, when a local peach farmer noticed a freshly dug hole on his property that had been mysteriously filled in the following day. Upon investigation, authorities unearthed the body of a man who had been stabbed and hacked to death. This grim finding prompted a more extensive search, leading to the revelation of multiple graves across the orchards. In total, 25 bodies were recovered, each bearing similar signs of violent attacks, primarily involving sharp-force injuries indicative of machete use.
Evidence collected during the investigation pointed directly to Juan Corona. In several graves, authorities found receipts and bank deposit slips bearing Corona's name. Additionally, a search of his residence yielded bloodstained weapons, including knives and a machete, as well as a ledger containing the names of several victims. Witnesses also reported last seeing some of the victims in Corona's pickup truck. These pieces of evidence collectively established a strong link between Corona and the murders.
Corona was arrested in the early hours of May 26, 1971. He was subsequently charged with 25 counts of first-degree murder. His initial conviction in 1973 was overturned on appeal due to concerns about inadequate legal representation. However, in a retrial conducted in 1982, Corona was once again found guilty on all counts and sentenced to 25 concurrent life sentences. He served his time at Corcoran State Prison in California until his death from natural causes on March 4, 2019, at the age of 85.
