In the spring of 1994, a minor fender bender in a DeKalb County, Georgia, restaurant parking lot tragically escalated into a fatal encounter for Anthony Maclin. On the evening of April 28th, a slight collision occurred between the vehicle occupied by Maclin and his fiancée and another car carrying two men, later identified as Devon Brown and Richard Jameswhite. An argument ensued over the damage to the vehicles. Brown and Jameswhite, who were fugitives from another state, were insistent on handling the matter without involving law enforcement. They promised to cover the costs of the repairs, and Jameswhite even left the scene temporarily to try and gather enough money to placate Maclin.
Despite their attempts to avoid police intervention, the situation grew increasingly tense. At one point, Maclin's fiancée attempted to leave to call the authorities, but he called her back. In a harrowing turn of events, as she momentarily turned away from the three men, a popping sound pierced the air. When she looked back, she witnessed a horrifying scene: Jameswhite was holding Maclin, and Brown was pointing a pistol at him. Brown then got into his car, and as Maclin fell to the ground, Jameswhite shot him. The two assailants then fled the scene in their vehicle, leaving Maclin mortally wounded. He later succumbed to his injuries.
A police chase ensued, leading to a nearby apartment complex where Jameswhite was quickly apprehended. Officers recovered two firearms from him. Brown, however, managed to evade immediate capture by shedding his shirt and cap and blending in with residents on an apartment balcony. His freedom was short-lived, as he was arrested the following day after Maclin's fiancée identified him from a photo lineup. An eyewitness and a police officer also placed Brown at the scene. Ballistics evidence later confirmed that the bullets and shell casings found at the crime scene were fired from one of the guns Jameswhite was carrying. Both Devon Brown and Richard Jameswhite were indicted for the murder of Anthony Maclin on June 23, 1994. They stood trial together and on December 12, 1994, a jury found both men guilty of malice murder. They were each subsequently sentenced to life in prison.
