A festive Fourth of July gathering in West Des Moines, Iowa, turned into a scene of tragedy in 2026, leaving a community in mourning and a young life cut short. On that evening, 17-year-old Teonnie Tillman was attending a large party in the 1100 block of 20th Place. Tragically, a verbal altercation broke out between some of the party attendees, escalating to the point where a handgun was fired. In the ensuing chaos, Teonnie was struck by the gunfire.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 10:35 p.m. and found the teenager with a critical gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts and her transport to a local hospital, Teonnie Tillman succumbed to her injuries.
The West Des Moines Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Their efforts led to the arrest of 18-year-old Byrone Sanchez-Zermeno of Des Moines the following evening. Sanchez-Zermeno was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon.
