In what has been described as a targeted, domestic-related incident, 48-year-old Herbert Lomax was shot and killed on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in a Mundelein, Illinois apartment. The shooting, which also left a 47-year-old woman seriously injured, occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. in the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive. Authorities were called to the scene and discovered Lomax and his girlfriend suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where Lomax was pronounced dead in the emergency room. An autopsy later confirmed that he died from multiple gunshot wounds. The female victim, who was also shot, sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The investigation quickly led to a suspect, 21-year-old Deandre Y. Harris of South Holland. Investigators determined that Harris was in a relationship with the 19-year-old daughter of the female victim. Both the mother and daughter resided in the apartment with Lomax. On the morning of the shooting, Harris was visiting his girlfriend when an argument erupted between him and Lomax. The confrontation escalated, and Harris allegedly produced a semi-automatic handgun and fired multiple shots, striking both Lomax and the 47-year-old woman. Following the shooting, Harris fled the scene with his girlfriend.

A description of the vehicle Harris was driving was broadcast to law enforcement agencies in the region. Less than two hours later, Illinois State Police troopers located the vehicle on Interstate 94 on the Far South Side of Chicago and conducted a traffic stop. Harris and his girlfriend were taken into custody. Investigators later executed a search warrant on the vehicle and recovered a firearm. Harris was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. His girlfriend was released from custody without charges. Court records indicate that a judge ordered Harris to remain detained as court proceedings move forward. The case is being investigated by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and the Mundelein Police Department. This tragic event stemmed from a domestic dispute that escalated to fatal violence, leaving one man dead and a woman wounded. The swift actions of law enforcement led to the rapid apprehension of the suspect, who now faces murder charges.
