Aliv’eyah “Livey” Chandler was an 11-year-old Black female whose life ended inside a home on Chatsworth Way in Columbus, Ohio, on May 27, 2026, in a double homicide that also took the life of her mother, 33-year-old Shalimar Green. What began as a welfare check became a devastating discovery after relatives, worried about Shalimar and Aliv’eyah, asked authorities to check on them. Before police arrived, a relative entered the residence and found both victims dead inside.
Columbus police and Truro Township Fire medics responded, and both were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators said the deaths unfolded against the backdrop of an ongoing domestic dispute between Shalimar Green and her husband, Derrick M. Green. According to police and court records reported by local outlets, both Shalimar and Aliv’eyah suffered multiple stab wounds and gunshot wounds. Officers recovered evidence that included bullet casings, a blood-covered knife, and clothing belonging to Derrick Green that was soaked in blood. Authorities said Derrick Green fled the home before officers arrived, but SWAT officers later located him and took him into custody without incident the same evening.
The loss of Aliv’eyah quickly moved beyond the crime scene and into the surrounding neighborhood, where friends, classmates, teachers, parents, and neighbors gathered outside the home with candles, flowers, stuffed animals, balloon releases, and handwritten messages. She had just graduated from sixth grade in the Groveport Madison Local School District, and people who knew her described her as kind, smart, funny, and someone who made other children laugh. Nearly 100 people came together for a vigil, and teachers from her elementary and middle schools attended to support students who were only days into summer break when they were forced to grieve a classmate.
Derrick Green, 35, was identified by Columbus police as the suspect in both deaths and was initially charged with murder. Prosecutors later said he was indicted on three counts of aggravated murder, each carrying a three-year firearm specification, along with tampering with evidence and two counts of gross abuse of a corpse. Court documents alleged that he shot and stabbed both victims multiple times. Prosecutors also stated that during an interview, Derrick Green admitted to killing Shalimar and Aliv’eyah and admitted to sexually assaulting Aliv’eyah after her death.
The case also drew attention because reports described prior allegations involving Derrick Green. In 2021, he had been charged in connection with a New Year’s Day shooting in southeast Columbus that left a man dead, but that case did not proceed after a grand jury declined to indict him. In 2023, he faced strangulation and domestic violence charges in a case involving Shalimar Green as the victim, but that case also did not move forward after a grand jury declined to indict. Columbus police leadership publicly expressed frustration after the killings, saying some individuals should not have been out in the community.
At his court proceedings, Derrick Green remained held in the Franklin County Jail on a $5 million bond. Family members described the killings as a rupture that left them devastated and also left Shalimar Green’s surviving sons without their mother. A victim impact statement read in court said the children were asking whether their father was going to hurt them next, and Shalimar’s family said they were now left to raise the boys while mourning both Shalimar and Aliv’eyah. As of the latest available reporting, Derrick Green had been arrested, indicted, and jailed, with the criminal case still pending.
