On the afternoon of May 28, 2026, 35-year-old Katrina Wheeler of Seguin, Texas, was shot and killed while she was putting groceries into her vehicle in the parking lot of a Walmart. The incident occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. at the store located at 550 S. Highway 123 Bypass. When Seguin Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found Katrina with multiple gunshot wounds; she was pronounced dead at the location.
A second individual, a 37-year-old man identified as Katrina's brother, Pito, was also shot and seriously injured during the attack. He was treated by emergency medical services at the scene before being airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect in the shooting was identified by authorities as 42-year-old John Wheeler, Katrina's estranged husband. He had already fled the Walmart parking lot by the time law enforcement arrived. About 30 minutes later, his vehicle was spotted by the New Berlin Marshal's Office outside of Seguin city limits. A low-speed chase ensued, involving officers from the Seguin Police Department, the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and other local agencies. The pursuit ended in the 3000 block of FM 775, where John Wheeler was taken into custody. Authorities reported that two young children were found inside his vehicle at the time of his arrest. John Wheeler was subsequently booked into the Guadalupe County Jail on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The investigation into the deadly shooting revealed a history of domestic violence. Court records indicated that Katrina had filed for divorce from John Wheeler in February 2026, and a hearing for a protective order was scheduled for early June of that year. Further investigation into John Wheeler's background showed a criminal history in Guadalupe County stretching back over two decades, which included multiple charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. In 2021, he was convicted in Bexar County for a violent assault against Katrina, during which he used a wooden ax handle to strangle her to the point of unconsciousness. The incident was not a random act of violence, as police believe the suspect and victim knew each other. Katrina was a mother of five children, who are now being cared for by relatives. Her family described her as a woman with a strong Christian faith who was devoted to her children and always willing to help others in need. The investigation into her death remains ongoing.
