Damon D. Nesmith, a 53-year-old man, was killed in a shooting at a home on Curry Court in Lumberton, New Jersey, in what authorities described as a murder-suicide. Online reports based on statements from Burlington County authorities say Lumberton police were called to the residence at about 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, after a report of gunfire. When officers arrived, they found Nesmith dead inside the home, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators identified the suspected shooter as Tyrone McLean, 56, of Lumberton. Authorities said McLean had recently been evicted from the Curry Court residence and returned there before the shooting. He allegedly entered the home armed with a. 40-caliber handgun and fired multiple rounds at Nesmith.
Two other people were inside the residence when the shooting happened, but they were not injured.
After the shooting, McLean fled in a Volvo SUV and drove about a half-mile away to Holland Place, where police later found him dead inside the vehicle. The SUV's engine was reportedly still running when officers located him. Authorities said McLean died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ending the possibility of an arrest or criminal prosecution in Nesmith's killing.
The violence did not appear to begin at the Curry Court home. Authorities also linked McLean to a separate shooting incident in nearby Southampton Township shortly before Nesmith was killed. Just before 4:00 p.m., New Jersey State Police responded to a home on New Road after reports of gunfire. Investigators said McLean had been speaking with an acquaintance there when he suddenly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots. That intended victim was not struck.
No surviving suspect has been publicly identified, and no arrests were reported in connection with Nesmith's death because McLean was found dead shortly after the killing. Authorities continued investigating the sequence of events, including the motive, with the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, Lumberton Township Police Department, Southampton Township Police Department, and New Jersey State Police involved in the case.
