According to the Marion County Sheriff's Department, Matthew Billingsley's death was the result of an accidental shooting. Authorities were called to his residence on Hotze Road where it appears he was shot in the abdomen. Reports indicate that the incident occurred as he was placing a pistol into a concealed carry holder while preparing to leave his home. He was initially transported to Salem Township Hospital before being transferred to St. Louis University Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injury. As his death was ruled accidental, there were no arrests made or suspects sought in connection with the case.
