In the quiet suburb of Oak Lawn, Illinois, the evening of May 4, 2026, was shattered by a domestic dispute that ended in the tragic death of 50-year-old Ayed Mdanat. The events of that night unfolded within the family's apartment on the 10400 block of South Austin Avenue, culminating in a fatal shooting that would lead to the arrest of his own son.
An argument had reportedly broken out between Ayed and his 18-year-old son, Sami Mdanat, seemingly over a cousin who had been visiting.
The disagreement escalated, and after the cousin left, the conflict between father and son continued. Sami then retreated to his bedroom and, in a chilling FaceTime call to his cousin, allegedly brandished a handgun and threatened to shoot his father if he entered the room. Moments later, the cousin heard Ayed pounding on his son's bedroom door, followed by the sound of multiple gunshots. Responding to several 911 calls, Oak Lawn police discovered Ayed Mdanat inside his son's bedroom, lying face down on a couch and bleeding profusely from several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office later confirmed that Ayed Mdanat died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Sami Mdanat fled the apartment. His mother, who was also in the home at the time, reportedly picked up the Draco 7.62 mm semiautomatic handgun used in the shooting, as well as three spent shell casings, and ran to a neighbor for help, discarding the casings in the trash. Police officers who arrived at the scene quickly identified Sami as the suspect and established a perimeter. He was found a short time later hiding in some bushes several houses down the street and was taken into custody. Sami Mdanat, a high school senior who had just turned 18, was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father. During his initial court appearance, a judge ordered him to be detained in jail while awaiting trial, noting that his fleeing the scene "showed a consciousness of guilt." The case is currently pending in the Cook County court system, with his next court date scheduled for May 29 at the Bridgeview Courthouse. This incident provides a grim overview of a family argument that escalated to a fatal act of violence, leading to the death of a father and the potential life imprisonment of his teenage son.
