A verbal dispute that escalated into violence on the afternoon of May 5, 2026, at the Schneider Skate Park in Durango, Colorado, resulted in the death of 29-year-old Noah Alan Roe. Roe, a resident of Bullhead City, Arizona, was shot three times following a physical altercation. The incident, which was reported to authorities at approximately 1:17 p.m., unfolded in the 1300 block of Roosa Avenue, a public space that soon became the center of a homicide investigation.
Witnesses at the
scene described a fight between Roe and another man, later identified as 42-year-old Chad Blechinger of Durango. According to accounts, Blechinger was reportedly winning the physical altercation before the two men separated. It was at this point that Blechinger is said to have produced a chrome-plated. 38 revolver. Accounts from bystanders indicate that Roe, who was unarmed, took off his shirt and challenged Blechinger to shoot him. Blechinger then allegedly fired three shots, fatally wounding Roe. Following the shooting, Blechinger reportedly approached a woman on a nearby footbridge and told her to call 911, stating that he had just shot someone.
The Durango Police Department's response was swift, aided by the use of drone technology that provided an aerial view of the scene as officers arrived. Video from the drones captured Blechinger lying on the ground to surrender to the authorities. He was taken into custody without incident at 1:21 p.m. While some community members and police officers administered first aid to Roe, he was transported to Mercy Hospital for surgery. Despite these efforts, Noah Alan Roe succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:04 p.m. Blechinger was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and was being held at the La Plata County Jail without bail. He reportedly claimed to have acted in self-defense. During his initial court appearance on May 7, 2026, he was formally advised of the first-degree murder charge, a felony that carries a potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court scheduled a preliminary hearing for June 23, 2026, to address a potential conflict of interest with the public defender's office, as they had previously represented Roe in a separate pending case. As the case is still in its early stages, there has been no trial, conviction, or sentencing to date.
