On the evening of March 26, 2026, a domestic dispute in a Thomasville, North Carolina, home on Tremont Street shattered the peace and ended a life. Cynthia Duff, a 69-year-old Black/African American woman, was fatally shot in what authorities have described as an isolated and tragic incident. Known for her warm heart and love for her family, her life was cut short in an act of violence that also left her teenage grandson wounded.
Police were called to the residence at approximately 7:59
p.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene. Inside the home, officers found Cynthia Duff suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, identified as 18-year-old Christopher Gardin, Duff's grandson, was also found with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect, who had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, was not at large for long. Responding officers located 71-year-old Clarence Taft Duff, Cynthia's husband, in his vehicle in the 500 block of National Highway. He was taken into custody without incident at approximately 8:09 p.m. The swift arrest brought a quick, though somber, development to the rapidly unfolding investigation.
Following his arrest, Clarence Taft Duff was charged with a string of serious offenses, including murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and discharging a firearm within the city limits. He is currently being held at the Davidson County Jail without bond as the investigation into the shooting continues. The community was left to mourn the loss of a woman remembered for her laughter, her cooking, and the love she so freely gave to her children and grandchildren.
