Joanie McSwain, aged 78, and her husband Davie Lee McSwain, aged 82, were tragically murdered in their Thomasville, NC home on October 29, 2015. The couple was found by their son when he arrived to take them out for their nightly dinner. The Davidson County Sheriff's Office determined that the couple was killed during a robbery. The suspects, Lloyd Wayne Franklin and Jennifer Michelle Lanning, were both from Davidson County.
Franklin was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, while Lanning was charged with being an accessory after the fact.
Franklin and Lanning were believed to have taken the McSwains' van, a dark blue 2006 Chrysler Town & Country, after the crime. Franklin was also suspected of robbing pharmacies in Aberdeen, NC, Georgetown, SC, and Roanoke Rapids, NC, while on the run. The investigation revealed that Franklin was shot by Davie McSwain during the attack, but Franklin managed to continue his crime spree before being found dead in a hotel room in Bucks County, PA, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with police.
