An investigation determined that she had been strangled to death four days earlier, on December 21st.

no suspects, and for decades, her case remained cold. The mystery surrounding her death became a poignant and somber part of her legacy, particularly after she was posthumously featured in the 1990 documentary 'Paris Is Burning.' In the film, her friends and chosen family from the House of Xtravaganza mourned her loss and spoke of the dangers she faced. It was speculated that her killer may have been a client who reacted violently upon discovering she was transgender.
For over three decades, there were no significant developments in the case. However, renewed interest and the efforts of her biological family and the House of Xtravaganza led to the case being reopened by the New York City Police Department in 2022. A recent documentary, 'I'm Your Venus,' brought to light a potential breakthrough. The film revealed that years prior, an incarcerated man had confessed to the murder of a prostitute in a Manhattan hotel. His account included details that closely mirrored the circumstances of Venus's death, such as binding the victim and hiding her body under a mattress. Tragically, this individual took his own life shortly after the confession, leaving many questions unanswered. Despite this lead, no one has ever been arrested or charged with the murder of Venus Xtravaganza, and her case officially remains unsolved.
