Chatfield, a young man on the verge of fatherhood, was fatally shot in the torso in the hallway of his apartment building at 30 Richman Plaza. The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m.
following what was described as an ongoing feud with his 76-year-old neighbor, Gilbert Smalls.
On that Thursday night, an argument erupted in the hallway. Hearing the commotion from inside his apartment, Chatfield went to see what was happening. It was then that he was shot. His mother, who was in their apartment at the time, heard the disturbance and found her son grievously wounded in the hallway. Emergency services rushed Chatfield to St. Barnabas Hospital, but he could not be saved. Friends and family remember him as a "bubbly peacemaker" who was excited about his future and preparing to support his growing family. He had been actively seeking employment and attending trade schools.
The investigation into the shooting led to a swift and unexpected conclusion. While canvassing the building for surveillance footage, NYPD detectives knocked on the door of Gilbert Smalls. When questioned, Smalls reportedly confessed to the shooting, stating, "I'm the one who shot him." He was taken into custody without incident. Smalls was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. The motive for the shooting appears to stem from a years-long dispute between the two neighbors.
