In the early hours of a Friday morning, the life of Thomas Coates Jr. was cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded within the walls of a North Linden bar. The 39-year-old Black man was at the First Stop Bar & Grill on Oakland Park Avenue in Columbus, Ohio, on April 3, 2026, when an altercation is believed to have broken out. What began as a dispute escalated tragically, and in the ensuing chaos, gunshots rang out, leaving two people wounded.
