In the early evening of April 7, 2026, 20-year-old Imani Ringgold was on a break from her new job as a home health aide in West Philadelphia. Having just started three days prior, she was saving money for her recently confirmed acceptance into the Community College of Philadelphia. She had just purchased a slice of pizza and was on the phone with her grandmother when her life was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire on the 5900 block of Market Street. The gunshots erupted around 6:20 p.m., a harrowing experience her grandmother overheard before the line went silent.
Investigators later determined that Ringgold was not the intended target of the shooting. She was an innocent bystander caught in what police believe was a violent feud between local gangs. Three assailants leaped from a dark-colored Mazda and opened fire on a group of men standing near where Ringgold was walking. She was struck multiple times, and tragically, one of the gunmen reportedly stood over her and fired again at point-blank range. Two other individuals, a 24-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, were also wounded in the attack but survived. Ringgold was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
In the days following the senseless act of violence, the Philadelphia Police Department identified two of the four suspects they believe were involved. Arrest warrants for murder were issued for 26-year-old Mustafa King and 21-year-old Zaire Manning. Authorities have circulated their photos, seeking the public's assistance in locating them. Two other suspects connected to the shooting remain unidentified. The vehicle used by the assailants was later found abandoned. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Imani Ringgold, and the two named suspects remain at large. A significant reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her death.
